Starting Out As A Photographer: Capturing Moments That Last A Lifetime.

William Uys // 31 May 2023

My journey as a beginner photographer has been an adventure filled with endless possibilities. If you’re driven by your creativity, photography offers a world of excitement and inspiration. Getting started may seem a little overwhelming, like anything you would do for the first time. This blog will give my 2cents through the essential steps to kickstart your photography journey.

  1. Define Your Goals and Vision:
First things first, take a moment to define your goals and vision as a photographer. What type of photography catches your eye? Are you drawn to landscapes, portraits, wildlife, or maybe even weddings? Finding your niche will help you channel your efforts and develop a unique style that represents you.
  2. Invest In Yourself:
While it’s true that equipment doesn’t make a photographer, having the right tools is crucial. Research and invest in a camera that suits your needs, along with a versatile lens (or lenses) that complement your chosen genre. Remember, it’s better to start with a decent setup and upgrade gradually as you progress.
  3. Learn the Basics:
Photography is a craft that requires understanding the fundamentals. Take time to learn about exposure, composition, lighting, and camera settings. Experiment with different techniques and settings to familiarise yourself with how they impact your images. Online tutorials, books, and photography communities can be excellent resources for gaining knowledge and expanding your skills. (Peter McKinnon is my fav)
  4. Practice, Practice, Practice:
The key to improving as a photographer is practice. Carve out time to shoot regularly, even if it’s just in your backyard or around your neighbourhood. Experiment with different subjects, lighting conditions, and perspectives. Embrace the learning process and don’t be afraid to make mistakes – they often lead to valuable discoveries.
  5. Study and Seek Inspiration:
Expand your horizons by studying the work of accomplished photographers in your genre of interest. Analyse their composition, use of light, and storytelling techniques. Attend exhibitions, browse photography websites and magazines, and join online photography communities to connect with like-minded individuals who can inspire and motivate you.
  6. Embrace Feedback:
Don’t shy away from seeking feedback on your work. Share your photos with friends, family, or fellow photographers who can offer constructive criticism. Embracing feedback helps you grow and see your work from different perspectives, ultimately refining your skills.
  7. Explore Post-Processing:
Editing your photos can enhance their impact and bring out the desired look and feel. Experiment with editing software to adjust exposure, colour balance, and other elements. Remember, post-processing should enhance your images, not compensate for poor shooting techniques.
  8. Build a Portfolio:
As you gain confidence and improve your skills, start building a portfolio. Select your best images and showcase them on a website, social media platforms, or even in print. Your portfolio acts as a visual resume and provides a glimpse into your style and capabilities.
  9. Connect and Collaborate:
Networking is crucial for growth as a photographer. Attend photography events, workshops, or local meet-ups to connect with fellow photographers. Collaborate on projects, join photography groups, and engage in discussions to broaden your horizons and learn from others.
  10. Embrace the Journey:
Remember, your journey as a photographer is a continuous process of learning, exploration, and growth. Embrace the challenges and enjoy the ride. Don’t compare yourself to others but instead focus on your progress and the joy of capturing moments through your lens.

In conclusion, starting as a photographer may seem daunting, but with perseverance and a willingness to learn, you can achieve your goals, define them, master the basics, practice consistently, and embrace feedback and inspiration. Remember, it’s your vision and creativity that will shine through in your photographs. So grab your camera, follow your passion, and let your photography adventure begin!
